Account Policies Page

We are proud to provide the village of Valemount, and surrounding areas, with access to the Internet. We have several plans to choose from, and there's bound to be one that works for you. You may change your account if you find that you're not using enough, or too much. The cutoff date for account changes is the 14th of every month, unless it is your first month (we realise that it's hard to guage your usage if this is your first time).

Stop by our store to fill out a sign-up form. To simplify setup, we ask that you bring in your computer to get it configured properly, even if you believe you are able to do it yourself. (Cost is covered in the sign-up fee, doing it yourself does not waive the install.)

*This is a labour and installation fee. This does NOT include any necessary hardware, and is required even if you choose to "do it yourself".

Wireless Connections
($150.00 for labour and RVIC provides and owns the hardware)

This is the base rate, and will end up being more if we have to crawl around in your attic for hours. The wireless equipment consists of a wireless Router and an antenna on your place of residence, which points back to one of our repeater sites. In general, a line-of-sight to one of our towers is required.

Wireless Light ($30.00)

This is the basic account that most people start off with and has a normal rate of 512 kbps send and 256 kbps receive. It is significantly faster than our dialup access, has ulimited hours, and most of all, it's cheap! The latency is lower as well, so gamers can enjoy lower 'lag' when they are playing. We recommend this account to anyone first starting on the internet.

Wireless Medium ($250.00)

Unlimited hours, decreased latency, and over three times as fast as Wireless Light. Those who tend to download or play games fairly often should consider this. Email and other web related actions are almost instant. Services which we have no real control over, such as peer-to-peer file sharing programs have varying levels of speed and stability.

Wireless Heavy ($750.00)

The same speed as Wireless Medium, but with faster service times. This is advisable if your business depends on Internet and you cannot be without it for an extended period of time. This level of service can expect Internet restored with 5 hours of RVIC being notified. Normal residential can be up to 3 days depending on the nature of the problem and our workload.

Modem Connections
($20.00 for setup and installation.)

Connection rates in Valemount are 33.6K for modem users. Depending on your phone access, like a party line or the old, rural, 9600 baud copper lines, your connection could be even slower. These are not limitations that we can do anything about, as they are in the hands of your local phone company (currently Telus, as of 1998).

Typical ($20.00)

This account is back by popular demand. Ten hours for twenty dollars. Extra usage is billed at two dollars and fifty cents an hour.

Lite ($30.00)

The Lite account is for the average person. A small family can stay under 30 hours with some limits in place. It's cheap, you basically get an hour a day; more importantly, you don't really have to worry about going over your limit, because it's only a dollar per extra hour.

Family ($40.00)

Those who use the internet for both business and pleasure might find that they need more than just 30 hours a month. Many families with one child or more also tend to require more time because, well, kids like the internet. If you're using close to 40 hours a month on a Lite, you may as well bump it up to this; you'll get 50 hours, for the same price. Overhours are still one dollar per hour.

Basic ($55.00)

When you reach this point, it is actually a very good idea to start saving for a wireless hookup. The economics lean heavily in favour of upgrading, but if you still want this account, we will happily take your money. Basically, it's 90 hours for 55 bucks. A few users find themselves needing this (and most that do, actually even go over their limit). If this limit is exceeded, the overhours are only 75 cents, but even that can add up really fast.

Additional Information

A five dollar late fee is charged on the 7th of every month for accounts unpaid, unless otherwise posted on the website or in store (posted late date changes will always be in the customer's favour, in the event of holidays). Accounts owing significantly large amounts will be disabled on the 14th of every month, and will remain that way until a genuine effort has been made to settle them.

Currently we can hook up Valemount Rural, McBride Rural, Tete Jaune, and Dunster residents. Customers can choose to have their email end with "valemount.com", "dunster-bc.com", or "mcbridebc.com". An important factor in acquiring a wireless connection is your ability to see one of our towers.
